Fire Up your New Year's Resolutions by being the "Biggest Loser".  On Monday, January 2nd, 2012 the Sedona Marathon Event kicks off the 7th Annual "Biggest Loser" Challenge. Over the past six years, each January, teams and individuals have lined up, measured up and ultimately seen who would triumph among them. This fun filled contest is the perfect way to jump-start your New Year's resolution.

The Biggest Loser Kick-Off takes place from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, January 2nd, 2012 at in the Goldenstein Gallery in uptown Sedona. The gallery is located at 390 N. State Route 89A, and there is ample parking behind the gallery.
Rules & Criteria:
  • Rather than pounds lost over a four-week period the Marathon takes hip and waist measurements at the start of the contest and then re-measures inches lost on race day.
  • To participate in the Biggest Loser you must register for one of the Marathon races. Participants can register for any one of the three races in the Sedona Marathon event: 5k, 10k, half marathon of the full marathon. Walkers are encouraged.
  • Individuals or teams of 2, 3, 4 or 5 can participate.
  • There will be winners in two categories: "Biggest Loser" individual and "Biggest Loser" team. In the team category, overall inches lost will be averaged out to a single number so all teams compete on the same playing field, no matter the number of members.
  • Need incentive to be the official Biggest Loser? Each member of the winning team and the over-all individual winner will win a 6 month membership to Snap Fitness Sedona, VOC or Cottonwood!

Immediately after the Sedona Marathon Event races that the participants complete on Feb 4th, 2012 they will be measured again to get results and determine the winners. Winners will be announced Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at the awards ceremony and post race festivities at Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.

Off the Couch Training Tips

1. Set your goal: Your goal is the blueprint for your success.
The key to setting a fitness goal is to construct a short, simple sentence that states the outcome you desire: what you want and when you want it. Keep it simple and to the point. The goal has to be measurable. For example, you could say, "I run three miles by my birthday." You can measure that. But you can't say, "I'm strong and fit by my birthday." If you can't quantify "strong and fit, "you can't use these words in your goal. Also notice that you are constructing the goal sentence as if the outcome has already been achieved.

  • I walk 5k by Feb 4th 2012.
  • By Christmas, I swim for 20 minutes.
  • My cholesterol level is below 200 before New Years Eve.
By stating a clear intention (as if the outcome has already been achieved), you set powerful wheels in motion. Before you start your first workout, your body, mind, and spirit are on the alert that things have changed in your life, not the least of which is your attitude how you see and feel about yourself.

No question about it, identity and intention are mystically, yet inarguably, intertwined.

2. When constructing your goal sentence, avoid using words that drain all the power and strength right out of your resolve:  WILL - CAN - TRY
Remember the more you truly believe and perceive something it will truly become a reality.

3. Make a Contract with yourself.
Put it in writing. Place this new intention on your fridge, on your computer, on your car visor, on your phone.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND BE HEALTHY! YOU CAN DO IT!

The Sedona Marathon continues its relationship with the renowned Wharton Health Experience as official sponsors of the event in our long term relationship. Father and son team, Jim and Phil Wharton, are the authors of the Wharton Health Books, have regular columns in Runner's World and USA Today and have personally trained over 500 Olympic medalists.

Phil Wharton is a world-renowned musculoskeletal therapist and coauthor of the best-selling Wharton Health Series. He has worked with people of all backgrounds, from Olympic medalists and professional athletes to those suffering from difficult conditions and chronic pain. Phil's path to becoming a therapist started when he was a young runner. He developed a 33-degree curvature of the spine / scoliosis, which produced constant pain. Through this work, he was able to end the pain, correct the problem, and continue his running career.

"Our aim is to change how people see themselves," says Wharton "It is so easy to get overwhelmed if you have gotten out of shape or gained weight. The program encourages small shifts and steps that add up to a healthier lifestyle. Small modifications and adjustments can change your life over time. This is about your whole life and not just a quick fix."

Nicknamed "The Mechanics" by USA Today, the Whartons (Phil and his father Jim) are internationally known trainers, therapists, and authors who established their practice in 1989 and changed the face of human performance. They have worked with luminaries in the sports world from professional football players to Olympic gold medal winners.
